What Is Electronic Brachytherapy?

Electronic brachytherapy is a modern form of radiation therapy that delivers a precise, low-energy dose directly to the surface of the skin where the cancer lives, sparing the healthy tissue beneath and around it. Because the energy is low and tightly focused, it can be delivered in a standard exam room — no hospital, no heavy shielding, and each session takes only minutes.

Dr. Shrager has used electronic brachytherapy and superficial radiotherapy (SRT) for well over a decade, with a particular focus on cancers of the nose, ears, lips, eyelids and scalp — areas where surgery often means grafts, flaps, or visible scarring.

"Alpha Dermatology is a pioneer in the field of electronic brachytherapy for the treatment of skin cancer."

How Treatment Works

1

Consultation & biopsy review

Dr. Shrager reviews your biopsy, examines the site, and confirms whether non-surgical treatment is the right choice for your cancer.

2

Brief office sessions

A small applicator is placed over the lesion for a few minutes. No needles, no anesthesia. You drive yourself home and go about your day.

3

Follow-up & confirmation

Skin may look pink or dry during the course, like a mild sunburn, then settles. We follow you afterward to confirm the cancer is gone and the skin has healed.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Non-surgical treatment isn't right for every skin cancer, but it is an excellent option for many. It is typically considered for patients who:

  • Have a biopsy-confirmed basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma
  • Want to avoid surgery on the face, nose, ears, lips, or scalp
  • Take blood thinners or have conditions that make surgery riskier
  • Have had prior surgeries and prefer a non-invasive approach
  • Have multiple lesions or a lesion where surgical closure would be difficult
